Nicholas Thompson

Gallery Manager

Nicholas Thompson has worked with commercial galleries in Queensland and Victoria. He has contributed to exhibitions at state and regional galleries, as well several Australian art publications including artist monographs and journals. Nicholas studied architecture and art history at the University of Queensland, and art curatorship at postgraduate level at the University of Melbourne.
     
 

 

 

 

Ciara Price

Gallery Assistant

Ciara comes to the arts sector having achieved first class honours in Philosophy at Melbourne University. She completed her thesis in aesthetics, defending a neo-Kantian theory of judgements of beauty. She has gained considerable experience in the arts industry, having worked and volunteered at numerous public and commercial institutions, including Heide Museum of Modern Art and Arts Project Australia.

     
 

Caroline Purves

Archives, Publications and Distribution Manager 

Caroline Purves, daughter of Tam and Anne Purves, commenced work at Australian Galleries in 1960 to 1966 as assistant to her parents. Later she was employed at TAA, and then returned to the gallery scene to work at the newly established Bonython Galleries in Sydney and John Gill Galleries in Perth. She later pursued a career in retail for almost twenty years until the death of her mother in 1999, wherein Caroline was re-employed by the gallery to maintain the comprehensive volume of archival material in the galleries’ extensive Archives Dept which was started in 1956 when Australian Galleries was founded.

     

Tamsin Purves

Archives and Distribution
Assistant

The eldest of Stuart Purves’ two daughters, Tamsin (Purves) Renn began her career in management catering for executive events in Melbourne. Having maintained a keen interest in the history of the family business, and a passion for design and aesthetics, Tamsin has since joined Australian Galleries to assist Caroline Purves in the management and operation of the Archives Department, whilst raising a young family of three with her husband.

 

 

Victoria Purves

Archives & Website Content Assistant

Victoria graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Gold and Silver Smithing from RMIT in 2009. Whilst continuing her practise creating  jewellery she works part time at Australian Galleries, assisting Caroline Purves in the Archives Department and is also responsible for the addition of current exhibition content on the gallery website. As the youngest daughter of  Stuart Purves, Victoria is the third-generation of the Purves family with continued involvement with the gallery.
     
 

 



Caroline Field

Australian Galleries Biographer

 
Caroline has obtained a Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts (Printmaking) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, a Master of Arts Degree (Fine Arts) at the University of Melbourne; and a Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies at Deakin University, Melbourne. Her previously held positions include being Director of the City of Horsham Regional Art Gallery, and Manager/Curator of the Museum of Art, Deakin University where she was responsible for the selection, acquisition and exhibition of significant works by contemporary Australian artists. She became founding manager of the University’s two galleries: the Stonington Stables Museum of Art, Toorak campus and the ICON Museum of Art, Burwood campus, Melbourne. Caroline has been with Australian Galleries for seven years and is presently engaged in research and writing the galleries’ history which is due to be published in 2016.
