Painter and printmaker Dean Brown completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking with Honours at the National Art School, Sydney and studied Classical drawing and painting at the Julian Ashton Art School, Sydney. His work explores notions of humanity, individuality and alienation through the observation of solitary figures within the urban environment.
“My work is inspired by and focused on the individual, in some form of motion or transit within the inhabitants of the city. I focus here on individual figures, pulled from a crowd or perhaps two people passing each other unnoticed within a mass. In this way I hope to draw some sort of attention and recognition and individuality to an otherwise invisible face within a crowd.” – Dean Brown, 2012
Brown’s work has been included in group exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Alice Springs, Fremantle, the Gold Coast and internationally in Korea. He has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize, Australian Print Triennial Prize, Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award, Mosman Art Prize and the Burnie Print Prize. Brown was awarded the Storrier Onslow National Art School Paris Studio Residency at Cité International des Arts, Paris in 2011 and most recently was included in a group exhibition titled ‘From Here to There: Australian Art and Walking’ at Lismore Regional Gallery.
